ABOUT

Mauricio F. Vargas

As a music composer and sound designer, I am inspired by the dynamic intersection of artistic ideas and new means of expression using technology to bridge the gap between artist and audience and re-evaluate the act of listening as a form of active creativity and artistic creation.

A diverse music background, encompassing classical, flamenco, jazz, and the folkloric music of different Latin countries has resulted in my unique approach to composition. I am equally comfortable working for small or large ensembles in an acoustic or electronic environment and am adept at crafting pieces in response to any brief.

Thanks to my experience developing VR/AR projects and my PhD research, I have recognized the extraordinary potential of audio-led experiences as a medium for artistic expression. Therefore, I am particularly interested in exploring XR interactivity as a musical voice to conceive unique aesthetics and creative experiences.

I have composed music and recorded immersive soundscapes for renowned publishers like Score a Score and Velvet Green Music and have worked as an audio and mixing engineer with well-known acts, including the late David Turpin, The Divine Comedy, and Duke Special. In addition, I have been working in the music industry for more than 15 years as a performer.

I hold an M.Phil. in Music and Media Technology from Trinity College Dublin, which adds to my BA in Music Composition from the University of Guanajuato (Mexico). I also took part in one of Europe’s leading music programs at the Université de Strasbourg (France) and obtained a Diploma in Sound Engineering from the Sound Training College.

In addition, I am completing my doctoral research at Trinity College Dublin. My research focuses on the influence of audio and audio-visual fidelity in the perception of realism, immersion, and co-presence in Virtual and Augmented Reality environments.
